Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi are set to meet on May 25 when the Bangladeshi leader will fly to the Indian state of West Bengal.
The meeting, the second in a month, comes after the leaders met in London last month at the sidelines of the Commonwealth’s heads of government summit.
The talks will centre on water, connectivity, power, energy and infrastructure, said a senior government official.
Replying to query on the politically significance of the visit, the official said, “The main foundation of any diplomacy is political relationship.”
Pulling up the example of neighbouring Myanmar, the official said that it’s difficult to prop up trade with the country for the lack of “political understanding.”
“Dhaka and Delhi have a very warm relationship and the leaders would like to walk an extra mile to boost the relationship,” the official said.
Hasina’s two-day visit to India starts on May 25, when she will inaugurate the Bangladesh Bhawan in Viswa Bharati University and receive a honourary doctorate degree from Kazi Nazrul University in Asansol.
She will fly for Kolkata in the morning and then travel to Viswa Bharati University, including Santiniketan, to inaugurate the ‘Bangladesh Bhawan’ along with Modi.
The two premiers will then attend the convocation of the university.
Hasina will return to Kolkata the same day and travel to Asanol the next day to receive an honourary doctorate from the Kazi Nazrul University.
She is expected to return Dhaka on May 26.
