Newly elected Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khalek calls on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban in Dhaka on Sunday. FOCUS BANGLAPrime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday said Khulna residents voted for Awami League as they understood that the party works for development.
She made the comment when newly elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khalek Sunday called on Hasina at Ganabhaban in the city.
Hasina said, “In the last election (in 2013) Khalek was defeated by a margin of 60,000 votes. This time we covered the gap and got more. This happened due to our development work and Khulna residents understood that if Awami League comes to power, they engage in development.”
Meanwhile, BSS adds: The Prime Minister greeted the mayor as he presented a bouquet of flowers to her.
General Secretary of Awami League Obaidul Quader, lawmaker Sheikh Helal and central and Khulna leaders of the party were present.
The Prime Minister thanked party leaders and workers for working together to ensure victory of the party candidate in KCC polls.
“The KCC polls indicate that winning any election is possible if the leaders and workers work together,” she said.
The prime minister said the Election Commission (EC) is performing its duties with full independence.
The EC is even barring the ministers from taking part in the election campaign which is rare in many democracies, she said.
