Of the 1855 candidates, 1422 have their deposits forfeited. Islami Andolan lost the most deposits with 297, followed by BNP with 152 candidates. No candidate from the ruling party lost their deposits.
As per Public Representation Order (RPO), a candidate has to submit Tk 25,000 while buying a nomination and if the candidate does not get one eighth of the votes cast then his/her deposit will be forfeited.
If the competing candidate gets one eight percent of votes cast or more, the deposited Tk 25,000 is given back.
Of the 1855 candidates, deposit could be recovered by 433 with 271 from AL and allies.
For Islami Andolan, 297 competed in the election and only one managed to save the deposit, while 296 lost theirs.
Of BNP’s 256 candidates, 152 had their deposit forfeited; for Jatiya Party, 133 lost their deposits from 154 candidates.
Twenty candidates won with JP’s plough symbol.
There were independent candidates in 130 seats and of them, 116 had their deposits forfeited. Fourteen won enough votes to recover the money while three became victorious.
