The Anti-Corruption Commission has grilled BNP leader Tabith Awal over allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources and money laundering.
Tabith, who sits on the party’s Central Executive Committee, appeared at the graft watchdog’s offices around 10am on Tuesday.
He was questioned for nearly four hours by a three-strong probe panel led by Deputy Director SMM Akhter Hamid.
Speaking to media at the ACC premises after the interrogation, Tabith declined to comment on the probe. “It’s not appropriate to comment as an investigation is on. I hope the truth will be revealed.”
Describing the questioning as ‘healthy talks’, the BNP leader said he hopes for a fair investigation.
Commenting on the political scenario, Tabith said that there was a political motive behind “everything happening now”.
“We hope the BNP chairperson will be released on bail in due legal process. I think whatever happening on that issue is political. The government intervenes,” said Tabith, the son businessman and BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo.
Tabith was the BNP’s pick as the mayoral candidate for the last election to the Dhaka North City Corporation.
