A petition has been filed with the High Court seeking a stay order on voting through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Dhaka-8 candidate for Jatiya Party and Supreme Court lawyer Dr Yunus Akand filed the writ on Monday (Dec 3).
“Voting through EVMs goes against section 65 and 93 of the constitution,” said Akand.
He added that the Law Secretary ASSM Zahirul Haque, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam, President’s Secretary Sampad Barua and Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda have been made respondents.
The law ministry published a gazette notification on Oct 31 stating the amendment of the Representative of the People’s Order that allowed the use of EVMs in the national elections slated for Dec 30.
On Nov 26, the Election Commission picked six constituencies where voters will cast their franchise through EVMs.
The six parliamentary seats which were chosen through a lottery from a list of 48 seats, are Dhaka 5 and 13, Chattogram 9, Rangpur 3, Khulna 2 and Shatkhira 2.
