State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki has said a change in mindset is imperative to stop violence against women.
“Violence against women will only stop when we teach our children to respect women and change must start from families,” she said on Thursday (Sept 6).
Speaking at a seminar tilted the “National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women 2018-2030” organized by the ministry in the city, Chumki said, “Massive public awareness programs and campaigns must be carried out so that no woman or child is subjected to violence.”
Director General of the Department of Women's Affairs, Kazi Rowshan Ara, Additional Secretary of the woman affairs ministry Mahmuda Sharmeen Benu and Project Director Dr Abul Hossain were present at the seminar.
Kazi Rowshan Ara said “Harassment in public transport and workplace is a major challenge to women empowerment. Unsafe work environment will hinder their progress significantly.”
Mahmuda Sharmeen said, “We are communicating with the stakeholders and all the districts and upazilas to facilitate an action plan,”
Multiple proposals have been submitted from the districts, some of which include a ban on child labor, a guideline on the conduct of public transport staff, installing GPS tracking system in every transport, impose a age limit for the usage of android phones to name a few,” said the additional secretary.
