Flag of Bangladesh and Libya. The 184 Bangladeshis who are languishing in Libyan jails are expected to be repatriated by next week.
“We are working on it, but we expect that they would be able to come to Dhaka by next week,” said an official of the foreign ministry.
These Bangladeshis are located in different jails in Tripoli and Benghazi and we want to pull them out of the country as soon as possible, he added.
International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is helping the government to bring them back.
When asked how many Bangladeshis are living in Libyan jails, he said earlier the number was 684 but many of them returned to Bangladesh.
A syndicate is working in Bangladesh which organises the very risky trafficking and people here are willing to pay a huge amount of money for this, the official said.
Citing the example, he said a few days ago a father came to the ministry seeking information about his son, now in a Libyan jail.
“That father told us that he paid Tk 1 million to certain traffickers to take his son to Europe,” he said.
The victims know about this trafficking from the beginning, but when they get caught, they seek our assistance, he added.
