The widespread activities of students on the road following an accident to create awareness about adhering to road regulations were praised by all.
Later, at the prime minister’s order, rover scout members helped traffic police during the traffic week.
In this flow, the government has taken a month long road regulation sensitizing programme.
Under this, campaigns will be carried out through students of all academic institutions to spread awareness about traffic rules among guardians, pedestrians and commuters. After a directive from the PM’s office, the ministry of education and Bangladesh Scouts will implement this and, September may also be declared a traffic month.
During the last traffic week, around 1800 rover scout members worked on the road and, later, when the PM’s office asked their opinion for better road safety, the scouts presented 48 recommendations.
The prime minister’s office has decided to give the implementation task of these recommendations to scouts and, the ministry of education.
Letters have already been sent to all academic institutions to provide scout members. From September 1 next, a united programme will be declared in all academic institutions. A directive from the education ministry says that traffic accidents are caused by unfit cars being driven by drivers without proper experience and, also, due to public negligence/ignorance about safety precautions.
During the month of September, leaflets will be distributed through scouts, girl guides and students. The ministry has also asked schools to have special sessions on road safety and talk about road regulations during daily assembly.
Academic institutions have been asked to take help from traffic department in this regard.
Secretary of the secondary and higher secondary education board, Sohrab Hossain told Bangla Tribune: “our students have showed us the flaws; what is needed most is awareness in all homes.”
Students are best placed to propagate concept of safe roads all over the country, he added.
He also expressed hope in the success of the upcoming month long programme.
Around 1.7m scout members will be working in September for a countrywide awareness programme about safe roads and the importance of following road regulations.
