The Election Commission is working on to introduced electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the upcoming national polls, says Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam.
The EC on Sunday convened a meeting of the commissioners to discuss on amending the Representation of the People’s Order (RPO) required to introduce EVMs.
“The meeting will resume on Aug 30,” Commissioner Islam told the media.
Responding to a query he said the RPO amendments will be forwarded to the law ministry for vetting, once the EC clears it. “It well then go to the Cabinet for approval before tabling in parliament.”
Ruling Awami League has been favouring the use of EVMs in polls, while the BNP and other opposition parties have expressed reservations, saying it may create room for vote rigging.
According to the existing constitution, election for the 11th parliament must be held within 90 days of the expiry of the 10th parliament. Accordingly, the next general election will be held between Oct 30, 2018 and Jan 28, 2019.
The EC may announce the schedule in November to hold the election at the end of December, Chief Election Commissioner Huda has said.
