'Robber' killed in Cumilla 'shootout'

Photo shows a police gun barrel.A suspected robber has been killed in a reported shootout with police in Cumilla.

The incident took place on Dhaka-Chattogram highway near Chhoygharia Sakin area in Chandina upazila early Friday (Mar 13).

The deceased Khokon, 45 hailing from Phultola village of Barguna district, was also an accused in a case filed over the murder of Muradnagar upazila Jubo League leader Khairul Alam Shadon, said Ikhtiar Uddin, inspector of Cumilla Detective Branch (DB) of Police.

Ikhtiar said: "On a tip-off, a team of DB police and Chandina police reached Chhoygharia Sakin area where a gang of robbers, including the accused were preparing to commit robbery. Realizing police presence, the robbers opened fire, forcing police to fire back for self-defence."

"During the exchange of fire, two police members and Khokon got injured, while other robbers managed to flee the scene. Later, we rushed the injured to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared Khokon dead." he continued.

Ikhtiar also said that police recovered a locally made pipe gun, two rounds of bullets, five rounds of shells, two machetes and several knifes from the spot.
