Rohingya ‘robber’ killed in Cox's Bazar 'shootout'

An alleged Rohingya robber has been killed in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as a shootout.

The incident was reported around 4am on Tuesday (Feb 4) from Jadimora Rohingya camp in Nayapara area of the upazila, said RAB.

The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Ilias, was a resident of Rohingya camp number 26 in Teknaf.

Three RAB officials have also been injured in the incident, said Teknaf RAB-15 Company Commander Mirza Shahed Mahtab.

"Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted a drive at the Jadimora camp. As soon as they arrived, members of Jokir Group, a local Rohingya robbery gang, exchanged shots with RAB officials, triggering a shootout," said Mahtab.

Around 12 people were injured in the incident. However, the other robbers managed to flee the area, he said.

Later, the elite force found the bullet-riddled body of Ilias and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor declared him dead.

He said a case have been filed with Teknaf police in this regard. The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
