A Bangladeshi man was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near Pakhiura border of Nageshwari Upazila in Kurigram early on Saturday (Feb 1).
The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Jamal, son of Lutfor Rahman from Montrir Char village of the upazila.
Narayanpur union parishad ward five Member Sahadat Hossain said: "BSF shot Jamal when he crossed over to India through Pakhiura to smuggle cattle."
Kochakata police station OC Mamun Ur Rashid said: "There was a bullet wound on the deceased's left rib. We have sent the body to the morgue for an autopsy. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident."
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-22 Director Lieutenant Colonel Md Jamal Hosain said: "We heard a gunshot near Pakhiura border under Border Outpost (BOP). We cannot at this point confirm who killed Jamal or how he was killed. We will know after the autopsy report is submitted."
Meanwhile, BSF says they regret not informing BGB about5 Bangladeshis who were picked up by BSF from Khorchaka border in Rajshahi.
Rajshahi BGB-1 Commander Lt Col Ferdous Ziauddin Mahmud said after a flag meeting with the BSF on Saturday.
The detained are Rajan Miah, 25, Shahin Miah, 35, Doel Miah, 27, Kabil Miah, 25, and Rafikul Islam, 30.
Col Ferdous said: "During the flag meeting BSF alleged that those five Bangladeshis entered India to smuggle cows. That's why they were detained."
BGB refuted BSF’s claim, saying the five Bangladeshis were actually fishermen who were picked up from Padma river while they were fishing. BGB also alleged that they were arrested inside Bangladesh territory.
BSF regretted not informing BGB about the matter, as per law, added the BGB-1 commander.
They were handed over to India's Murshidabad police station on Saturday, Lt Col Ferdous confirmed and there are fears that will be prosecuted in Indian.
All the detained persons are residents of Gohomabona village in Paba upazila.
The five men were picked up from Khorchaka border in Paba upazila of Rajshahi on Friday.
