‘Robber’ killed in Noakhali ‘shootout’

Photo shows a police gun barrel.An alleged robber has been killed in Noakhali’s Senbag Upazila in what the police described as shootout.

The incident was reported around 2.45am on Tuesday (Jan 28) from Birkot area in the upazila’s Kesharpar Union, said police.

The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Anowar Hossain alias Yousuf who police claimed a robber of an inter-district robbery gang and was wanted in 12 cases.

“Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive at Jomidarhat area in Begumganj Upazila and arrested Yousuf around 9.30pm on Monday (Jan 27). Later, he was interrogated at the police station when he confessed to his crimes,” said Senbagh police OC Mizanur Rahman.

“Upon information from Yousuf, police launched a drive at Birkot area to detain the other members of his robbery gang. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Yousuf’s cohorts opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back in self defence triggering a shootout. Yousuf was caught in line of cross firing while his cohorts managed to flee the scene,” said OC Rahman.

“Yousuf was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital where the doctor declared him dead,” added the OC.

Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Alamgir Hossain said, “A foreign made pistol, 7 rounds of ammunition, 3 machetes, 7 empty bullet shells, a torch light and a lighter were seized from the scene.”

Police said three of their members, Sub-Inspector Jashim Uddin, Assistant Sub-Inspector Lokesh Mohajan and Constable Abdur Rahman, were also injured in the shootout. They took first-aid at the hospital.
