A court in Gaibandha has sentenced three people to death and given five-year sentence to eight others over the murder of Govindaganj Municipality mayor’s son five years ago.
Each of the convicts have also been slapped with a fine of Tk 100,000 each.
Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge Dilip Kumar Bhowmick passed the verdict on Thursday (Jan 16) in the presence of all 11 convicts.
The death-row convicts are Shariar Sarker Hridoy, Rakibul Hassan Sajib and Mahmudul Hasan Zakir Pradhan.
Meanwhile, Masud Pradhan Sujan, Al Amin Islam, Al Amin, Rabeya Begum, Shimul Mia, Runa Begum, Jahangir Alam and former councillor Jaynal Abedin have been given five-year sentences.
Ninth-grader Ashiqur Rahman Soumya, the son of Gobindaganj Municipality Mayor and Awami League’s district unit General Secretary Ataur Rahman Sarker was abducted on Sept 24, 2015.
Police recovered his body, tied up in a septic tank near a community centre the next day.
Ataur Rahman filed a case against 11 people over the murder and the police charged them a year later.
According to the court’s observation the murder was carried out due to political vendetta.
Public Prosecutor Shafiqul Islam Shafiq expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict saying that they will move the top court.
“All 11 convicts conspired to murder my son,” the victim’s father Ataur Rahman told the media after the verdict was pronounced.
He added that they had expected exemplary punishment for all 11 and would file an appeal against those who have been given prison terms.
