The ships were handed over to Indian company Jindal Steel Works on Friday (Jan 10), on the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Homecoming Day.
Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das were present during the ceremony.
Western Marine Shipyard Chairman Saiful Islam said that this is the first time 8,000 Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) ships have been made in Bangladesh.
Two large ships made in Bangladesh have been exported to neighbouring India for Tk 500 million each.“These two ships imported to India will be a landmark for Bangladesh’s shipping industry,” he said.
According to Western Marine Shipyard sources, they received an order for four ships from Jindal Steel Works in 2015.
Two of the ships were handed over in 2017 while the remaining two were handed over on Friday.
The shipyard’s Managing Director Sohail Hassan said that these ships with the capacity to move at a speed of 10 nautical miles will be used to carry coal and iron from India’s Jaigar port to Dharamtar port.
