‘Robber’ killed in Jhenaidah ‘shootout’

Police gun barrelAn alleged robber has been killed in Jhenaidah’s Moheshpur Upazila in what the police described as shootout.
The incident was reported in the early hours of Tuesday (Dec 17) from the eastern area of Bakrakhal Culvert in Krishnachandrapur in the upazila, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Shahrul Islam alias Khokon Hossain.

“A gang of robbers was attempting to commit a robbery in the area. A police petrol team, which was passing by the scene, has encountered firing from them,” said Maheshpur police OC Rashedul Alam.

“In retaliation, police fired back which triggered the shootout.  Soon after the robbers have given up and escaped the scene, police arrested Khokon with gunshot wound,” the OC said.

The alleged robber was taken to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared him dead, he added.

Police have recovered a shutter gun, one round of ammunition, tree-cutting tools from the scene.
