People in Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal upazila—the tea capital of Bangladesh—are feeling the bite of extreme cold with temperatures quickly dropping at the onset of winter.
The lowest temperature in Bangladesh so far was recorded at 11.3°C in Sreemangal at 9am on Saturday, confirmed the Sreemangal weather office and Ruhul Kuddus of the Dhaka Met office.
“According to the last three day's data, the lowest temperature in the country was recorded at Sreemangal,” said Zahidul Islam Masum of the Sreemangal weather office.
In Moulvibazar district, especially in Sreemangal and Kamalganj upazila, the mercury continues to drop. People in the upazila's wetlands and tea gardens have been suffering the prevalent cold wave in the region.
Sreemangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Nazrul Islam and Kamalganj UNO Md Ashekul Islam, both confirmed they have started distributing warm clothes to people in need.
Dr Subrata Singha of Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex said: "We are seeing an increase of cold-related diseases due to the severity of the weather. Everyday 20-25 children and adults are taking medical help for cold-related diseases from our hospital."
