The Noakhali CID has arrested a ring of three who used romance as a tool to entice people into falling for trips to European countries. Two of them are students of Noakhali Government Women’s College and the other is their assistant, a bKash agent.
District CID’s Sub Inspector Shah Alam said: “There is a corrupt ring of women active in Noakhali. Its members pose as daughters of men living in European countries and entrap people in romantic relations, with pledges of taking them to Europe. Then they take photos of the men in intimate poses and threaten to reveal all unless large payments are made.”
They also took money on the false pretext of helping terminally ill people, he added.
“They use many IDs on social media and close them down once their work is finished.”
Saiful Islam, person from Companyganj who lives in Kuwait, lodged a case against the accused for defrauding him. Later, the police arrested college students, Marjahan Akhter and Shahzadi Mazumder. Proof of large quantity of money exchanged through their bKash accounts was found. It was learnt that pretending to be in love with Saiful, the girls took Tk 550,000 from him. They also 'earned' several million from others.
From a resident in Bahrain, they took money ostensibly to help destitute people. They used Messenger, Imo and other social media apps to deceive others.
