Section 144 imposed in Sunamganj

SunamganjThe local administration in Sunamganj has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the district’s Chatak upazila to avoid unwanted incidents during the programmes of two Awami League factions.
The emergency situation will remain effective for 12 hours on Sunday (Dec 8).
Chhatak Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Golam Kabir said that two rival factions of the ruling party’s district unit called programmes at the same place and time.
“To avoid unwanted incident, the ban has been imposed at the municipality area and its surroundings,” he said.
According to police, local AL Joint Secretary Abul Kalam Chowdhury and Vice President Muhibur Rahman Manik made announcement to hold separate rallies on Sunday near the upazila party office.
Kamal, who also serves as municipality mayor of Chhatak, announced the programme to congratulate party chief Sheikh Hasina for the recent crackdown against corruption and protest the cutting remarks on former Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad, Chhatak police OC Mostofa Kamal told Bangla Tribune.
Later in the day, leaders of local lawmaker Manik’s group have announced another rally near upazila AL headquarters, he added.
“The rallies have sparked tension among citizens,” OC Kamal said before adding that police have deployed in different spots of the town.
