Cholera fears at Rohingya camps

In the last two months, around 1500 persons were given treatment for diarrhea with 700 below the age of five. Health department has detected Cholera strains among Rohingyas who fled Myanmar. In the last two months, Cholera germs have been found from more than 300 Rohingyas.
Doctors are blaming congested living conditions, scarcity of water and unhealthy living conditions.
In the last two months, Cholera germs were detected in more than four hundred people in Ukhia-Teknaf. Cox’s Bazar civil surgeon, said, “The number of patients is rising at the Rohingya refugee camps but no one has died as yet.”
There’s no reason to panic, people are being given treatment, he assured.

Doctor Zakaria Selim at ICDDRBs Leda camp, observed: “This is the result of living and eating in unhealthy conditions. Unless the camp people drink clean water, diarrhea will spread across the camp.”
Teknaf upazila health official added: “We are getting news of Cholera on a daily basis and five medical teams of NGOs are working to prevent a spread.”
In the last two months, around 1500 persons were given treatment for diarrhea with 700 below the age of five. It’s found that in addition to diarrhea, cold, fever and cough are also noticed and 70 per cent of the sufferers are children.
The health department says that from Dec 8, immunization for Cholera will begin and 492,000 people and 150,000 Rohingya children will be given jabs.
