Brahmanbaria Civil Surgeon Office banned the determining an unborn child’s gender by ultrasonography in all government or private hospitals of Brahmanbaria.
Confirming the matter Dr Md Shah Alam, a civil surgeon of Brahmanbaria told the media: "From now on hospitals cannot use ultrasonography to determine an unborn child's gender in Brahmanbaria. On Nov 15, this decision was taken unanimously by the doctors present in a meeting of the MaMoni project which focuses on healthcare for mothers and newborns. Letters have been sent to all hospitals and doctors regarding this."
"Earlier having ultrasonography done to learn a child's gender was banned by various international organizations as well as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, but there was no implementation," said Dr Md Shah Alam.
There was chaos surrounding a newborn in the 250-bed Brahmanbaria General Hospital on Nov 24. Two women gave birth that afternoon. One of them, Dipti Rani Das of Paikpara area of the municipality claimed that she gave birth to a boy, not a girl, the hospital has misplaced her baby. The son on the other woman, Tamanna's lap is actually hers.
She said that her doctor after doing ultrasonography, had told her a number of times that she is expecting a boy.
There was a dispute with the hospital authority as they asked the parents to show the ultrasonography reports and offered to conduct a DNA test if needed. The family however had the mother released from the hospital and left with their daughter.
