Dozens missing in Mongla trawler capsize

The ongoing rescue at the scene of Mongla trawler capsize on Sunday (Nov 24)A passenger trawler capsized into Poshur River near Mongla claiming at least one life with several still missing.
According to local administration and survivors, the vessel left from Laudob terminal Dakope upazilla for Holicim Terminal of Mongla on Sunday (Nov 24) with 120 passengers.
“The trawler hit a dredger around 7:45am in the morning and went under the machine,” said Mongla police OC Md Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury.
Local administration said that the vessel was overloaded; however, the number of missing persons is yet to be confirmed.
“The trawler was allegedly carrying passengers beyond its limit,” OC Iqbal said.
“Necessary action will be taken after a probe,” he added.
So far, one body has been recovered which was identified as Shundar Biswas, 50, from Bajuya area of Dakope.
A coordinated rescue operation by the navy, coast guard, local police and fire service is still ongoing.
