Lawmaker Tamanna Nusrat Bubly FACEBOOKRuling Awami League has decided to expel Tamanna Nusrat Bubly, a lawmaker for reserved seats for women, on allegation of hiring lookalikes to take exams in her place
The decision came at a meeting of AL's Narsingdi district unit held at the residence of Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun at the district's Monohardi Upazila on Friday (Nov 22), district AL President lawmaker Nazrul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
A woman affairs secretary of Narsingdi AL unit, Bubly was expelled by the Bangladesh Open University (BOU) authorities after an allegation of hiring proxy for her Bachelor of Arts examinations (BA) late in October.
Nazrul said the party took a policy decision to expel lawmaker Bubly as she "got involved in a crime that tarnished the party's image".
A letter addressing the matter would be sent to the party's central committee, he added.
Claiming a conspiracy at play against her, Bubly said she has not heard of the decision yet.
"To my knowledge, a person is provided with a chance to defend himself/herself prior to serving an expulsion order. This a part of a conspiracy against me," she added.
On Oct 20, the BOU authorities scarped all of Bubly's BA examinations and registration after one of her proxy was identified at Narsingdi Government College centre sat for the test.
The scandal emerged after private broadcaster Nagorik TV entered a test hall and confronted one of the women posing as Bubly, in a video that went viral.
She was accused of paying the lookalikes to pretend to be her in at least 13 tests.
According to a college official, the proxy students were protected by her musclemen when they sat for the tests.
Everybody knew it but nobody uttered a word because she is from a very influential family, the official added.
Bubly is the wife of former Narsingdi mayor Lokman Hossain, who was shot dead by the terrorists at the local Awami League office on Nov 1, 2011.
