The Rangpur Express train caught fire following a derailment in Sirajganj's Ullapara upazila injuring at least 20 passengers on Thursday (Nov 14).The derailment of the Rangpur Express train at Sirajganj’s Ullapara was likely caused by faulty rail line, says the chief of one of the probe panels opened over the incident.

“No faults in the signal was found during primary investigation,” Md Abdullah Al Mamun who heads a panel formed by Pakshi Rail Division said on Friday (Nov 15).

“It’s primarily being suspected that the accident was caused by faulty rail lines,” he added.

The official said that around five employees of the Assistant Deputy Engineer’s office have been called in through the GRP for questioning.

On Thursday (Nov 14), a Rangpur Express train caught fire in Ullapara upazila injuring at least 20 passengers.

The Rangpur-bound train caught fire after its oil tanker burst following the derailment of the engine and seven coaches.

After the accident, rail links between Dhaka and the northern districts remained cut for nearly seven hours, leading to the collapse of the train schedule.

Four probe panels have been opened to look into the accident that occurred merely two days after the fatal collision between two trains at Brahmanbaria’s Kasba that left 16 people dead.
