A schoolboy has been killed after a four-storey building collapsed in Narayanganj.
The incident on Sunday (Nov 3) at the city's Baburail area left at least five others injured, said Nahida Barik, the administration chief (UNO) of the Sadar Upazila.
The building at the Tantipara neighbourhood in Baburail collapsed in the afternoon, she said before adding that locals rushed to the scene immediately and pulled out five people from the debris.
"They were taken to the Narayanganj General Hospital, where doctors declared one, identified as Shoeb dead," said the UNO.
Shoeb's family has confirmed that he was a sixth-grader at the local Uzir Ali High School.
The Fire Service says they suspect that more people may be trapped under the debris, Deputy Assistant Director of the Narayanganj Station Abdullah Arefin told UNB.
"Six firefighting units along with divers have been working to rescue the trapped people", he was quoted saying.
The building was constructed two years back on a canal reportedly without following the building code, the news agency reported quoting locals.
Meanwhile, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Jasim Uddin, Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Afsana Afroz Biva, among others, visited the spot.
The district administration will provide Tk20,000 to the family of the deceased, the DC said.
"We will investigate the incident, and legal action will be initiated against the owners of risky buildings, including this one," he added.
