At least 300,000 fishermen of the coastal districts have started going into the Bay of Bengal as the ban on fishing was lifted on Oct 30.
The fishing season starts from October every year, but the fishermen could not go to the sea due to the ban on catching fish, including hilsa.
Fishermen at Barguna set the course to the deep of the Bay of Bengal and the ones at Khulna to the areas near the Sundarbans.
Sukumar Biswas, fishermen of Khulna’s Dumuria said, “We had to loan money from wholesalers to meet the ends and provide our families.”
Dumuria Upazilla Fisheries Officer Md Abu Bakar Siddique said, “The ban on fishing Hilsa was active from Oct 9 to Oct 31 midnight. The fishermen have start journey for fishing.”
Barguna Fishing Trawlers Owner Association President Golam Mostofa demanded to set up a floating RAB camp at deep-sea to end sea piracy.
“The pirates are organizing themselves after the last piracy crackdown held,” he alleged.
Barguna District Fisheries Officer Md Abul Kalam Azad said, “Government is concerned about fishermen’s safety. RAB, police, navy and coastguard are joining to bringing pirates down at sea.”
