A newborn girl has been sold to a childless couple for Tk 20,000 at Jamalpur’s Sharishabari on Wednesday (Oct 30).

The mother of the newborn, 23-year-old Nazma said that her husband died when she was expecting.

She added that she came to Jamalpur when she was six months pregnant and gave birth to the girl on Oct 20.

“At the hospital, I got acquainted with Fahima Begum who gave me shelter after delivery,” she said.

“Fahima brought me a proposal from Pogoldigha Union’s Saiful and Marufa, who wanted to adopt my child. The childless couple also wanted to pay me Tk 20,000. I accepted the offer,” she added.

The local upazilla parisad member Montu Miah said, “Nazma accepted the adoption offer to ensure livelihood and medical treatment of the baby.”
