A court in Chattogram has sentenced BNP leader Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury to three years in imprisonment for issuing a life threat to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He has also been slapped with a fine of 5,000 on him with an additional three-month jail term for failure to pay it.
Chattogram Senior Judicial Magistrate ASM Shahidullah Kaysar delivered the verdict in Giasuddin’s absence on Wednesday (Oct 30), confirmed Public Prosecutor Sameer Das Gupta.
Giasuddin, the younger brother of executed war criminal Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, is currently absconding after securing bail in the case.
According to the case dossier, in a discussion on the death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman on May 29 last year, Giasuddin said the fate of Hasina would turn out to be worse than that of her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975.
Fatikchhari upazila unit Awami league general secretary Nazim Uddin Muhuri filed the case on May 30.
He was indicted on Sept 18 and the court heard six testimonies before passing its verdict on Wednesday.
