Police have brushed aside an assertion that the fire incident at Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) is a sabotage act.
The fire incident at stage arranged for the celebration of 57th founding anniversary of the university was reported on Saturday night. President Abdul Hamid is scheduled to attend the programme on Sunday as the chief guest.
Mymensingh Police Super Syed Nurul Islam said, “Primarily we can say due to electricity short-circuit, the fire broke out.”
The Vice Chancellor of the university said, “The incident happened after the security team had taken over the stage.”
Two committees have been formed to investigate the fire incident.
The incident was reported at 11.45pm on Saturday, said the fire-fighter officials.
Six fire engines have brought the fire under control around 12.45am, said deputy director of Mymensingh Fire Service Shahidur Rahman.
The organizers have shifted the event at city’s Shilpacharjo Jaynul Abedin Auditorium.
The president is supposed to inaugurate ''Haor and Chor Development Institute'' at the university following Sunday's programme.
