Relatives are seen wailing after a man was killed in a firing by Border Guard Bangladesh troops at a polling centre in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari on Monday (Oct 14).

Two people have been killed as Border Guard Bangladesh troops opened fire after chaos erupted at a polling centre in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari in the fifth phase of uapazila election.
The incident took place at the polling centre at Patrajhiri Government Primary School of the upazila’s Gumdhum union around 3pm on Monday (Oct 14), Presiding Officer Imdad Ullah told Bangla Tribune.
The deceased has been identified as Mongkisa Chakma and Aungchai Mong Marma.
Locals said a group of supporters of local union parishad member, Azmat Ali Bulu, came to the polling station to cast fake votes around 3pm. As supporters of another candidate, Babul Kanti Tongchangya prevented them a chaotic situation arose outside the polling zone.
At one point, on-duty BGB members opened fired to control the situation, leaving one dead on the spot and another wounded.
Critically injured, Aungchai succumbed to his injuries on way to a Cox’s Bazar hospital.
Three union parishads — NaikhongchhariSadar, Sonaichhari, and Gumdhum — under the upazila went to polls earlier in the morning for the election of new chairmen and members. The incident took place amid voting.
