Two people were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Marine Drive road in Himchari area in Cox’s Bazar early Thursday, RAB sources said.
One of the victims was identified as Enamul Huque, 33 and another’s identity is yet to be known.
They believed to be drug dealers, RAB sources said.
RAB and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) joint forces team gave a signal to a Cox’s Bazar-bound car to stop around 3:45am at a check-post set up in the area, said Company Commander of RAB-7 Major Mehedi Hasan.
Defying the signal, the car moved on and at one point, the ‘drug dealers’ opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to fire back that triggered a gunfight, he added.
The two people were rescued with bullet injuries and took them to a local hospital where the doctors declared them dead, said the OC of Ramu Police Station Mizanur Rahman.
Afrozul Haq Tutul, Additional Superintendent of Cox’s Bazar Police, said that the lawmen collected evidence from crime spot.
Details will be revealed later, he further said.
