The students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) carried on with their protests in front of the administrative building, completely drenched in a 16-long-hour rain, which started on Sunday afternoon and continued till around 8 am on Monday (Sept 23).

A demonstrating student of the law department Shohag Hossain said: "Let it be rain or any other adversity, we will not return home until the vice-chancellor resigns."

The demonstrating students of other departments said they were beaten up, which left 20 of them injured, and even the female students were harassed. Now nothing can stop the protest until their demands are fulfilled.

The students started protesting when the BSMRSTU authorities issued an order to suspend second-year law student Fatema-tuz-Zinia earlier this month. The university, however, lifted the suspension order on September 18.

On September 19, the students began the sit-in hunger strike, demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor.

On September 21, the student hostels were closed down and the students were asked to leave. The attacks took place on the same day, leaving 20 of them injured.

The students alleged they were attacked by local and hired goons, on the order of the vice-chancellor. However, Prof Dr Khondoker denied the allegation.

Humayun Kabir, a teacher of the social science department, was exempted from his proctorial post due to the attack on the students. Many other faculty members have supported and shown solidarity to this protest.
