'Terror hideout' cordoned off in Narayanganj

Narayanganj3Three suspected militant has been held from a building in Narayanganj that the counterintelligence unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had cordoned off, suspecting it to be a militant den.

The raid began as members of Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit surrounded the house near Tokkar Math area in Fatullah early Monday, said Fatullah Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Aslam Hossain.

The OC said: "We have already arrested three suspected militants and still have the house surrounded. Several police forces are working alongside the members of counter-terrorism unit."

Narayanganj2The arrested suspects are sons of former Bangladesh Bank deputy director-general Joynal Abedin, Farid Uddin Rumee, 27, his wife Jannatul Foara Anu, 22, and his brother Jamal Uddin, 25.

Farid is a faculty member of the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering in Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), his wife is an Agrani Bank official, while Jamal was a faculty member of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), Narayanganj police Special Branch Inspector Sajjad Rumon confirmed.

Meanwhile, a bomb disposal unit has been dispatched at the militant den around 11:15 am and are working there, Inspector Sajjad Rumon added.

Many police officials said they suspect that the house contains explosives and types of equipment for making bombs.

Additional Superintendent of Narayanganj police (Crime) Abdullah Al Mamun is also present at the scene.

CTTC Deputy Commissioner (DC) Saiful Islam told the media that they conducted a raid on the building upon receiving information that it is a possible militant hideout.

He said: "We are still in operation. More details regarding the matter will be disclosed later."
