Rohingyas among three killed in Teknaf 'shootout'

Police gun barrelThree youth including two Rohingyas with links to crime have been killed in what the police described as a shootout in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.

The incident took place at Shaplapur of Baharchora hilly area on early Thursday (Sept 19).

The deceased rohingyas were identified as Md Jamil, 20, Md Asmat Ullah, 21, of Camp 17 of Balukhali, Ukhiya. The deceased Bangladeshi national is Md Rafiq, 24, who was from Shaplapur.

Officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model police station Prodip Kumar Das confirmed the news.

He said police conducted a drive in the area, taking the detainees along with them, based on their information. However, when the law enforcement agency members reached the spot, associates—lurking there—opened fired at them, leaving three members of the police injured.

Police fired back at them in self-defence, triggering the gunfight. At one point, the detainees were injured, the OC added.

They were rushed to the Teknaf Health Complex, where doctors on duty declared them dead.

"After the shootout, police recovered the bodies and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy,” said Das.
