An election commissioner has expressed his confidence over a free and fair election to the Sylhet City Corporation slated for Jul 30.
“An all-out preparation has been taken to create a congenial poll-time atmosphere in the city and the election will be 100-percent fair. Overall situations are good and no concern over breaching the electoral code of conducts. Candidates are following the campaign rules, no troubles have been reported,” Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam said in Sylhet on Saturday.
Islam travelled to the eastern divisional city to attend a view exchange meeting with the mayoral and council runners in the city election.
The Commissioner said, “Rapid Action Battalion, police and Border Guard Bangladesh and Ansar forces will be deployed (during the election).”“Other forces will also be deployed if necessary. However, I believe that we have deployed more forces than our requirement,” he said.
Asked on army deployment, Islam said, “Army deploying for what? Will the people of Sylhel declare war against the country? If they do so then we’ll call the army.”
Calling the candidate to file complaints, if any, in black and white, Islam assured them of ‘taking necessary action’.
“If any election officials don’t act accordingly, stern action will be taken against the official,” said the commissioner.
