Masterminds behind Rohingya grand rally identified

REUTERSThe probe panel formed by the government has identified the masterminds, who were behind the Rohingya mass rally in Cox’s Bazar without the permission of the local administration.

On Sept 3, Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain forwarded the inquiry report to the NGO Bureau containing the name of the instigators.

They are: president of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, Mohibullah, the Rohingya organisation's vice president Master Abdur Rahim, Nurul Masud Bhuiyan, who is a lecturer of Ukhia Degree College, supreme court lawyer Dulal Malik, researcher of Rajshahi University Dr Faridul Alam, Moulana Yusuf, advocate Mahbubur Rahman, Public Prosecutor of Cox’s Bazar district magistrate’s court,  Md Abdur Rahim, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor in Cox's Bazar, and assistant sub-inspector of police appointed to the camp, Borhan Uddin.

Cox`s Bazar DC letter to NGO bureau.Without taking permission from the authority, the rally was arranged with the involvement of two organisations, Voice of Rohingya and Rohingya Refugee Committee, RRC.

Voice of Rohingya printed 700 half sleeve t-shirts while Rohingya Refugee Committee printed 100.

The investigation report said that before the rally, an NGO called ADRA had meetings at a Cox’s Bazar restaurant on Aug 19 and Aug 21 and Rohingya leader Mohibullah was handed Tk 250,000. Also, ‘Al Markajul Islamic Agency’ supported in making T-shirts for the Rohingyas.

To make the rally a success, RRC chairman of D-5 block Sirajul Mostafa collected Tk 25000.

A donation of Tk 200,000 also came from London based Nurul Islam.

Reportedly, the motorcycle of camp-based ASI Borhan Uddin was used and it’s believed that there are 300 active members working for Mohibullah’s organisation.

Lecturer of Ukhia College, Nurul Masud Bhuiyan, works as general secretary of this organisation and was active in the rally. It’s believed Masud’s predecessors are from Myanmar.

At the Rohingya camp, Mohibullah had a meeting with the US ambassador, Earl Robert Miller, and then got the chance to meet the US president, Donald Trump in Washington.

Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner, Md. Kamal Hossain said: “the locals became unnerved by the massive Rohingya rally held on 25 August and to unearth the mystery behind the rally, a probe committee was formed by the district administration. The report has been sent to the NGO Bureau.”
