The deceased Babul, 39, Ershadul, 26, and Ali Mia, 43, were residents of Debidwar, Brahmanpara, and Burichang upazilas, respectively.

Confirming the matter, district Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mainuddin said: “Acting on a tip-off that a gang of robbers were planning a robbery, DB police and Burichang police station officials conducted a drive in the area.

“Realizing that law enforcement was present, the suspects opened fire, causing the police to retaliate in self-defence."

"Babul, Ershadul, and Ali sustained bullet injuries in the incident, while the others managed to flee. They were taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where the on-duty doctors declared them dead,” the OC added.

Meanwhile, four members of the police - Burichang police station OC Akul Chandra Bishwas, Sub Inspectors Mozammel and Golam Mohiudding, and Constable Rafiq - were also injured during the drive.

Police recovered firearms, bullets and sharp weapons from the scene.

Each of the suspects was accused in several cases of robbery, drugs and arms dealing, and murder, OC Mainuddin added.
