Six students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) students at Gopalganj have been suspended for posting statuses on Facebook regarding the state of cleanliness in the classroom.
A suspension order by Registrar Professor Nuruddin Ahmed on Sept 4 said that the students have been suspended on account of “hurting the image of the university.”
According to the order third-year students of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department- Habibullah Niyon, Rashed Hassan, Munim Islam Hira, Jhilam Halder and Debrata Rai have been suspended.
Amongst them, Niyon has been suspended for one year while the rest have been suspended for a semester.
The suspension order said that Niyon wrote about the state of cleanliness of a classroom on Facebook after which the department Chairman Dr Bilas Kanti Bala gave him a warning.
The students, however, ignored the warning and posted statuses again and made “objectionable remarks about the chairman,” which is in violation with the university discipline.
“The six students have been suspended on the recommendation of the six-member probe committee formed over the incident,” the order said.
The department chairman didn’t answer his phone when Bangla Tribune tried to reach him for comments.
Meanwhile, the registrar said that the decision was taken after committee spoke to the students.
The suspended students declined to comment as well, saying that they will apologise to the authorities.
