Two dead, six missing as wedding party boat sinks in Jamuna

FILE PHOTOAt least two people have died and six others, including a policeman, have gone missing after a boat, carrying a wedding party, capsized in Jamuna river in Sirajganj's Kazipur Upazila.

The incident occurred in a remote char area, near Mansur Nagar union of the upazila, on Wednesday (Aug 14).
One of the deceased has been identified as Renu begum, 55, hailing from Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur.
Renu's husband Zabed is also missing after the incident. However, the identity of the other missing people is yet to be ascertained.
Kazipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Zahid Hasan Siddique said: "We have heard that the boat has capsized due to the river’s strong torrent, leaving three people missing. It was carrying people who were attending a wedding ceremony in the Sariakandi area of Bogura.
"On information, members of police and Fire Service started a search and rescue operation. As of now, a woman's body has been recovered from the water. The search for others is underway," he added.
Inspector SM Masudur Rahman, of Kazipur Jamuna Char's Natuapara police outpost, said: "Upon receiving information, we have sent a police team, led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Ripon, Ahmed, to the spot."
