Traffic was sluggish on the Dhaka-Tangail highway due to a 25km-long tailback that has formed from the Karatia Hat bypass to Bangabandhu Bridge.
Spot visits found that thousands of Eid-ul-Azha holidaymakers were stuck on the highway after Thursday rains and craters on the road slowed down traffic movement in the Elenga bus stand area at the entrance to the country’s north.
The two-lane system from Elenga to Bangabandhu Bridge was also causing the queues to grow longer.
Traffic congestion on the highway had increased since Thursday (Aug 8) evening after holiday-makers began their journey home for Eid.
Officer in charge of Bangabandhu Bridge police station (east) Mosarrof Hossain told Bangla Tribune that around seven hundred police personnel were working to alleviate congestion on the highway.
