Two 'drug peddlers' killed in Teknaf 'shootout'

Cox`s BazarTwo alleged drug peddlers, including a Rohingya man, have been killed in Cox's Bazar in what the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) described as a shootout.

The incident was reported early on Wednesday (Jul 24) near from Leda Rohingya Camp in the district's Teknaf Upazila, said BGB.

The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Mohammad Kamal, son of Mohammad Islam of Balukhali Rohingya camp and 23-year-old Mohammad Habibur Rahman.

Additional Director (Operation) of BGB-2 Battalion Maj Md Rubayat Kabir confirmed the incident through a SMS on Wednesday morning.

"Being tipped off, a BGB team raided the area early on Wednesday. As soon as the team reached the spot, a group of yaba paddlers opened fire on them, prompting the BGB members to fire back in self defense which triggered the shootout," said Maj Mohammad Rubayet Kabir.

"The two drug peddlers were caught in line of cross firing and were rush to Teknaf Health Complex and then transferred to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctor declared them dead," said Maj Kabir.

"Firearms and 100,000 contraband yaba tablets were seized from the spot," he said.

"Three BGB members, Mofizur Rahman, Uzzal Hossain and Imran Hossain, were also injured in the incident," added the BGB official.
