The Rajshahi University (RU) students, demanding civil service quota reform came under attack when they were trying to form human chains protesting the assault on students demanding the reform in Dhaka University on Saturday.
The students allege that the pro-government student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), swooped on their peaceful gathering.
The incident took place when the BCL men allegedly attacked them after the students gathered at different points, including the premises of the Central Library, to form human chains around 9:50am on Sunday.
Later, a group of 100 to 150 students again regrouped in front of the library around 11am in an attempt to form a human chain.
But the BCL men came on the students with sticks. Witnesses say that around 40-50 BCL men led by the Rajshahi University unit president, Golam Kibria, and general secretary, Faisal Ahmed, chased the quota reformists from the library area and physically assaulted some protesters.
“Around 150 students were preparing to form a human chain when BCL activists attacked us and left five or six injured”, alleged Morshed Alam, a leader of ‘protestation of quota reformation’ at RU campus.
Admitting to the allegation of chasing protesters, Golam Kibria, said: “We just tried to prevent persons who wanted to trigger unrest in the campus.”
Earlier, on Saturday night, the RU unit of BCL vowed to foil any attempt to destabilise the campus. We have tried to talk to both the quota reformists and BCL; effective measures will be taken to keep the campus stable,” Proctor, Dr Lutfor Rahman, told Bangla Tribune.
Yesterday, at least seven members of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, the platform demanding civil service quota reforms, were allegedly beaten by a group of BCL activists in front of Dhaka University Library.
