Rifat murder: Another Farazi brother arrested

The accused, Rishan Farazi was arrested around 10:05am on Thursday (Jul 18).Police have arrested another suspect in the murder case of Rifat Sharif, who was hacked to death in broad daylight in Barguna last month.

The accused, Md Rashidul Hasan alias Rishan Farazi was arrested around 10am on Thursday (Jul 18), said Barguna Superintendent of police (SP) Maruf Hossain at a media briefing.

He said, being tipped-off, a police team, led by Shahjahan Hossain, additional superintendent of Barguna police, conducted a drive and arrested Rishan.

However, he declined to disclose further information about the raid.

Rishan is the younger brother of the second suspect in the case, Rifat Farazi, who was also arrested in the case on Jul 3.

“So far, police have arrested 15 people in the murder case including the prime witness Aysha Siddiqa Minni. Earlier, the prime accused of the murder case, Nayan Bond, was killed in a shootout on Jul 2,” said SP Md Maruf Hossain.

“Among the 15 people, 10 have confessed to their involvement in the murder at court and other four have been taken to remand,” he added.

A group of assailants stabbed Rifat Sharif to death in front of his wife outside the Barguna Government College on the morning of Jun 26.

A video of the attack later went viral on the internet, which sparked outrage throughout the country. Two men were seen hacking Rifat with sharp weapons as his Minni desperately tried to save him.

The victim, Rifat Sharif, was taken to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

In the same day, the victim’s father, Dulal Sharif, filed a case against 12 people, including prime suspects Sabbir Ahmed Nayan alias Nayan Bond and Rifat Farazi.
