Ctg 3-year-old killed by ‘medical malpractice’

Raifa, the daughter of Dainik Samokal Chattogram Bureau Senior Correspondent Rubel Khan, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday with cold and throat ache.A 3-year-old girl has allegedly been killed due to medical malpractice at a private hospital in Chattogram (Chittagong).
Police detained a doctor and a nurse after the child passed away at the Max Hospital Friday night but later released them.
A five-strong panel has been formed to investigate the child’s death.

Khan’s neighbour Shamim Ahmed said, “The hospital gave her antibiotics that night and she expressed discomfort. When we informed them and they suggested consulting a paediatric specialist.”
The hospital’s child Specialist Bidhan Chandra Roy prescribed the same kind of medication, said Ahmed, a Chattogram-based senior reporter for the Daily Ittefaq.
“Raifa began to have seizures after taking the medicine. A ‘Sedil’ injection was given her upon Dr Bidhan’s advice. She then stopped moving,” he said.
A five-strong panel has been formed to investigate the child’s death.The media rushed to the hospital after the incident was reported, when police detained the doctor and nurse.
Chawkbazar Police OC Abul Kalam said they brought in three people, including the doctor, to the police station.
“They were released after a discussion between journalist leaders and doctors,” he said before adding any case was yet to be started over the incident.
Chattogram Civil Surgeon Md Azizur Rahman Siddiqui said a five-member committee has been formed to probe the child’s death.
“I have spoken to doctors of the Max Hospital. Further steps will be taken when the panel’s findings will be available,” he said.
