Barishal City CorporationCandidates for mayor and councillors posts at Barishal City Corporation (BCC) submitted their nomination papers on Thursday. 

The BCC elections are scheduled to be held on Jul 30.
Total eight candidates will fight for the mayoral office and 152 others will participate in general councillor run-up, said the Returning Officer of BCC election Md Mujibur Rahman.
The eight mayor aspirants are: Awami League (AL) backed candidate Serniabad Sadik Abdullah, BNP supported Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, AKM Mahbub Alam from Khelafot Mojlish, Iqbal Hossain Taposh from Jatiya Party, independent candidate Bashir Ahmed Jhunu, AK Azad from CPB, Dr Monisha Chakraborti from BSD and Obaidur Rahman Mahbub from Islami Andolon.
Flanked by the supporters and party activists, the AL candidate, Serniabad Sadik Abdullah and BNP backed mayoral candidate Mojibor Rahman Sarwar submitted their candidature to the Barishal regional election office amidst a festive atmosphere.
Talking to the press after submission, Serniabad said that the people’s demand is his election manifesto. “If elected I will keep continuing the propeller of the development in the city.”
He also hoped for a free and fair election to choose the city mayor.
However, Sarwar cast doubts on holding a credible election citing that the AL candidate belongs to an influential family of the prime minister.
Competing here in this circumstance is very unfavourable, he said.
The BNP man also hopeful to see a participatory election in the city.
Until Wednesday, a total of seven persons submitted for the mayor post and 229 for general councillor and reserved seats for women.
Total 2, 42,166 voters to choose their city guardian for the next five years in Barishal.
