‘Robber’ killed in Pabna ‘shootout’

Photo shows a police gun barrel.An alleged robber has been killed in Pabna in what the police claimed a shootout.
The incident was reported around 2.30am on Wednesday (Jul 10) from Hasampur area in the district’s Sujanagar Upazila, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Saiful Islam Geda alias Gedalal, a member of a local robber gang, who has several cases filed against him with Pabna and Manikganj police stations.
“Police conducted a drive on Tuesday evening and arrested Saiful from his residence. Later, based on his information, police raided Hasampur Eidgah area, taking him along with them, to recover weapons,” said Sujanagar police Inspector Arvind Sarkar.
“As soon as the police reached at the area, Saiful’s associates opened fire on the law enforcers and in self defense police had to fire back which triggered the shootout,” said Sarkar.
“Saiful was shot in the crossfire while his associates managed to flee the scene. Saiful was rushed to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries,” he said.
Three police personnel- Sub-Inspector Minarul Islam, Constable Amjad and Constable Nurul Islam were also injured in the shootout.
A firearm, two ammunitions, two empty bullet shells, few sharp weapons and two torch lights were seized from the scene, added the police officer.
