A woman was set on fire allegedly by her husband at Munshiganj’s Sreenagar upazila on Friday (Jun 7).

Forty-two year Jasmine is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital Burn Unit.

The doctors at the burn unit said that she has sustained 65 percent burn injuries and she is in critical condition.

According to her family, her husband, Sirajul Islam set her ablaze following a family dispute.

However, Sreenagar police OC Yunus Ali said that Jasmine told the doctors she attempted suicide by setting herself on fire.

He added that as of Saturday (Jun 8), no case has been filed over the incident.

“Jasmine told the doctors that she tried to kill herself. Besides her family is busy with her treatment but we are keeping in touch with them,” he said.

OC Ali said that her husband has been on the run since the incident.

Local and police sources said that Jasmine is a mother of two and her husband Sirajul allegedly abused her both physically and mentally on a regular basis.

Her brother Sabbir Hossain complained that she had been having trouble with her husband since they got married.

“Their daughter is disabled and she [Jasmine] was tortured because of that as well,” he said.

He added that Sirajul was unemployed and he set her on fire during their last fight about her visiting her father’s house.

Meanwhile, although she told the doctors that it was attempted suicide, Jasmine was allegedly heard saying in a video footage shot by her family, “My husband poured kerosene on me and set me on fire.”
