Three Rohingyas with ties to crimes killed in a so-called shootout with the police in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday on the hills adjoining the Leda Rohingya refugee camp, said Teknaf Police OC Pradip Kumar Das.
The dead are Shamsul Alam, 35, Nur Alam, 21, and Habib, 20.
The three were members of a kidnapping gang based in the refugee camp. They were fugitives embroiled in a child kidnapping case.
Shamsul Alam, Nur Alam and Habib were hiding near the Leda refugee camp on Friday evening, said OC Pradip.
A police team launched a raid on the hilly areas adjacent to the camp to arrest the suspects in tow.
“When the police arrived at the scene, their accomplices opened fire at them. The police retaliated and at one point, Shamsul Alam, Nur Alam and Habib were shot in the crossfire.”
They were rushed to the Teknaf Health Complex, where doctors on duty declared them dead.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight, he added.
Police recovered three locally made guns, eight rounds of bullet and eleven rounds of bullet shells from the scene.
