Forest department has seized 160kg of venison along with two deer heads, hides, and large amount of traps in the southern district of Barguan.
The seizure was made during a raid on a canal in Char Lathimara area of the district’s Patharghata Upazila early Saturday (May 18), said Badiuzzaman Khan Sohag, local beat officer of Forest department.
The trawler that was carrying the venison has been sized but everyone on board managed to escape, he added.
Forest department, however, identified the trawler’s owner, Abdur Rahman Sikder who is a known deer poacher in the area.
“Sikder along with four to five others were involved in dear poaching,” said Sohag adding they were trying to trace the rest of the poachers.
Forest department’s Patharghata range officer Md Moniruzzaman said as many as eight deer are believed to be slaughtered from different places of Sundarbans and legal action would be taken against the poachers.
A small portion of the venison has been preserved to test with the rest has been destroyed, he added.
