An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the police described as shootout.
The incident was reported around 11.30pm on Friday (May 17) from Mistiripara area in Teknaf Upazila’s Shahporir Dwip, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Mohammad Ibrahim, who police claimed as a yaba peddler.
“Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Ibrahim late on Friday. Following his information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area along with Ibrahim to seize smuggled yaba tablets. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, his associates opened fire on police, forcing police to fire back which triggered the shootout,” said Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.
“Ibrahim sustained bullet injuries during the shootout and police rushed him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared him dead,” said Das.
Three firearms, 5,000 yaba tablets and 13 rounds of ammunition were seized from the scene, he said.
Three police members, Sub Inspector Deepok, Constable Shakil and Litu, were also injured in the incident.
The body has been kept at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, added the OC.
